The University of Rennes 1 is one of the two universities in the city of Rennes, France. It is a multidisciplinary institution consisting of three main scientific areas:

  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Health;
  • Law, Politics, Economics, Management and Administration Science;
  • Human Sciences (Philosophy and Communication).

 

The University of Rennes 1 has been in existence since 1969, but its heritage stems back to the days of the Breton university founded in 1461. In Rennes, the University is split into three major campuses with all facilities. It also has several departments outside of Rennes, in Brittany.

The University currently welcomes about 26,000 students (including about 3,400 from abroad), plus more than 2,500 in continuing education, all surrounded by 1,800 teachers and full-time researchers and about 1500 administrative and technical staff.

Beside its core missions of higher education and scientific research, the University of Rennes 1 makes it a point to provide its members with a friendly environment. This involves:

  • services specifically aimed at students (internships, social welfare, health, services for disabled students, student associations and initiatives);
  • a rich cultural life shaped around the University center for Arts, Culture and Sports, the Diapason;
  • a dynamic sports department offering various disciplines and ways to practice;
  • a number of digital facilities, services and resources.


Last but not least, it is to be noted that campus life does not only involve students, but also the University faculty and staff. They have their own dedicated department, the Human Resources department, which manages all recruitment and career issues.


A nice place to live

In order to further its students' academic success, the University of Rennes 1 is anxious to provide them with the best possible environment. This involves parts of their lives that are not closely linked to their studies, but that nevertheless matter:

  • health: the University has its own medical department;
  • social welfare: among others, scholarships and housing services can be provided to the students.

 


The University is also committed to meeting the specific needs of all its populations: thus, disabled students as well as high-performance sportspeople can benefit from various adjustments in their studies.

Beside the academic studies it offers, the University will allow students to gain additional knowledge and skills by helping them to prepare for and seek internships.

Last, the University is also a community where students are encouraged to become full citizens and to show initiative. They can achieve this by being involved in student associations, which will for sure make their personal lives richer.

Studying at the University Of Rennes-1

The University of Rennes-1 welcomes many foreign students on its Rennes, Lannion, Saint-Brieuc and Saint-Malo campuses. In 2014-2015 3787 foreign students came to study at at the university:

  • 3331 came as individual students
  • 456 students came either as Erasmus exchange students, or registered within the framework of a bilateral agreement with their university of origin, or as participants on the Erasmus Mundus European Master programmes.


The University of Rennes-1 endeavours to provide foreign students with all the  practical information necessary  in order to alleviate any hindrance that may perturb their stay in Rennes (see Practical information).

 

Exchange Programmes

The University of Rennes 1 takes part in the following exchange programmes:

  • European Union programmess, particularly Erasmus +;
  • BCI Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire;
  • bilateral cooperation agreements dealing with student exchanges.

 


The exchange programs work according to the following principles:

  • Students remain enrolled at their home institution and thus pay their tuition fees normally.
  • Students are exempt from tuition fees at Rennes 1.
  • The students do not obtain a degree from the University of Rennes 1, but a sucessful study period spent there can be validated to obtain their home degree.


The University of Rennes 1 uses the European credit system ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).

 
If your objective is to prepare a degree of the University of Rennes 1, then the admission requirements and procedures will be different. In that case, please refer to the University's provision of training and to the standard admission procedures.


The Application Procedure

Definition of the learning agreement and the application process

In association with your course leader in your home university, your programme of study should be carefully elaborated and validated by your university in order to ensure that the learning agreement that ensues responds to the academic requirements for the issuing of your diploma.
 

Documents required for the application process

  • Erasmus + or bilateral exchange programmes: use the application forms from your home university. If the application forms are not available at your university, you can request them at the University of Rennes-1’s International Office sai@listes.univ-rennes1.fr
  • Other exchange programmes (BCI, ....): Use the specific application forms reserved for these programmes

 

To whom and when should your application file be sent  

  • Your application file has to be transferred to the University of Rennes-1 for validation:
  • Students coming to Rennes-1 on the Erasmus + programme must send their applications directly to the University of Rennes-1’s faculty international coordinator for processing
  • Students coming to Rennes-1 to study within the framework of a bilateral agreement must send their applications directly to the University of Rennes-1’s faculty international coordinator
  • For other exchange programmes (BCI...), application files should be sent directly to the international office sai@listes.univ-rennes1.fr

 

Calendar

There is no fixed deadline to send your application however, in order to avoid unnecessary delays and to ensure the smooth running of the programme; it is strongly recommended that applications be sent in May.



Enrolment Procedure

Upon arrival in France, you will be required to enrol on the course for which you will be studying at the university. A student card will be given to you after enrolment.

How to enrol

 

First and foremost, you need to contact your international coordinator at the faculty in which you will be studying, see the list here
 

Please take the following documents with you to your international correspondent within the faculty

  • Proof of enrolment as an ERASMUS + or exchange student at your home university: Learning agreement and/or letter of confirmation validated by the registry office in your home university
  • Home university student card
  • a copy of your national identity card or passport
  • a copy of your birth certificate translated in French (English versions are accepted)
  • 3 recent passport-size photos
  • 26 euros for sports registration (2015-2016)
  • a copy of your European Health Insurance card originating from the European Union or the European Economic Area
  • SE 401-Q-102bis form for students from Quebec on the BCI programme
  • Students of other nationalities will be required to subscribe to the French student social security scheme (LMDE or SMEBA) at an annual cost of 215 euros (2015-2016 rate)

 

Please note that there are no tuition fees for exchange students.



Coming To Rennes As A Non-Exchange Student

 

The University of Rennes-1 registered over 3400 international students (580 exchange students and 2820 as non-exchange students) for study programmes or research projects in 2012-2013. All the courses offered at the university are open to foreign students on condition that they have the required minimum French proficiency.

For students who do not possess this language pre-requisite, they can either follow a preparatory course which will give them access to a Master’s course taught in French the following year, or alternatively, they may choose to study one of the courses taught exclusively in English.  



Useful tips

Although a faculty international coordinator is at hand to advise and inform individual students, it is their entire responsibility to ensure that all the necessary formalities are accomplished before coming over to study. An unwavering determination and a well thought-through career plan are the key to success.  

  • Think thoroughly about your study and career plan: gather all the information you can about the choice of degree programmes, the French language proficiency required and the other course pre-requisites
  • Start preparing your stay well in advance (a year ahead is the recommended norm)
  • Contact the faculty’s international coordinator for about the application and enrolment process
  • Ensure that all administrative formalities are looked-after before your departure
