The University of Primorska was established in 2003 as a public university. It comprises seven Faculties -Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Management, Faculty of Mathematics, Science and Information Technologies, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Tourism Studies - Turistica, Faculty of Health Sciences and Faculty of Build Environment as well as two associate members – Faculty of Design Ljubljana and Valdoltra Orthopaedic Hospital. UP also comprises two research institutes - Science and Research Centre and Andrej Marušič Institute, Student Residences and University Library.
The University of Primorska committed itself to follow the trends within the formation of the European University and Research Area and to become a modern university open to international co-operation.

In the field of education, the University of Primorska aims to promote and further strengthen the diversity, internationalisation, quality and social dimension of study programmes carried by the university and, at the same time, to support the development of the culture of mutual cooperation and integration between its members.
Innovative study programmes at all three cycles of study are offered in the study areas of: teacher training and education science, humanities, social and behavioural science, business and administration, law, life sciences, mathematics and statistics, computing, engineering and engineering trades, agriculture, forestry and fishery, health and personal services.
Graduates acquire a diploma which includes Diploma Supplement and with it also a professional or academic title. The Diploma Supplement is published in Slovene language and one of the official languages of the European Union.
In the field of education, four long-term goals are indentified:
The first cycle study programmes are academic and professional study programmes. Their duration is determined by years (three to four years) and credit points (180 to 240 ECTS). More information can be found in the offer of Undergraduate study programmes.
The second cycle study programmes (master’s study programmes - master’s professional degree) consist of between 60 and 120 ECTS and last one or two years. The duration of a master’s study programme must be planned with regard to the duration of the first cycle study programme. The total duration in the same field of study must not exceed five years (3+2, 4+1). More information can be found in the offer of Master study programmes.
The third cycle (doctoral study programmes) last for three years, and the study requirements consist of 180 ECTS. More information can be found in the offer of Doctoral study programmes.

Tuition Fees
Foreign citizens from non-EU countries have to pay tuition fees for full-time undergraduate study programmes. The tuition fee must be paid for the current year of study upon enrolment at the faculty. The amount of the tuition fee is set by the higher education institution and is the same as the tuition fee for part-time study programmes for citizens of the Republic of Slovenia. The price list is available only in Slovene language (Cenik storitev Univerze na Primorskem).
The tuition fee does not include the mandatory health insurance. This has to be settled before the start of study.

Academic calendar
The academic year lasts from 1 October to 30 September. First cycle study programmes have minimum 20 and maximum 30 hours of lectures, seminars and tutorials per week and 30 weeks per year. If the study programme includes practical training, the total burden of a student may not exceed 40 hours per week and 42 weeks per year.

Continuing education programmes are a form of lifelong learning, and are intended mostly for training, supplementation, enhancement and upgrading of knowledge. Members of university also organise various forms of informal learning, for instance classes, summer schools, training programmes and similar.
