The University College for Agrarian and Environmental Pedagogy is the pedagogical centre for the training of teachers and advisors in the work fields of agriculture, forestry and the environment. Both the rural and the urban economic area of Austria will increasingly become influenced by structural, ecological and societal changes. Well-trained young people and the further training of disseminators largely contribute to a sustainable and future-oriented development.

The University College for Agrarian and Environmental Pedagogy offers scientifically sound training related to the students’ future work fields. The students gain pedagogical, personal and professional key competences from the perspective of sustainability. This aims at becoming fit for the challenges in
society and in their jobs.

Bachelor Studies in Agrarian Pedagogy

In this training, students acquire the necessary qualifications to teach pupils of Schools of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences as well as adults in further education. Therefore, promoting the students’ ability to convey their expertise successfully has become the central aim of our teacher training programme.

Our focus lies on subject areas such as business management, agricultural sciences, food sciences, renewable energy, educational sciences, personality development and project management. Students will also have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in internships in the agricultural and forestry sciences education sector.

Qualification & Authorisation
This course qualifies students to

  • teach at vocational schools of agricultural and forestry sciences
  • teach the subject ‘Agriculture and Environment’ in Secondary Agricultural and Forestry Colleges
  • work as experts in the agriculture and forestry consulting and promotion service

 

Our Degree Programmes
Our college offers two degree programmes:

  • Agrarian Pedagogy: 180 Credits, minimum time: 6 semesters (primarily for graduates of Secondary Agricultural and Forestry Colleges)
  • Agrarian Pedagogy: 60 Credits, minimum time: 2 semesters (primarily for graduates of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences)

 


Bachelor Studies in Environmental Education

In our bachelor study programme Environmental Education, great importance is attached to the qualification of students in the areas of environment, sustainable development and pedagogy. The programme involves issues such as a sustainable development in local and regional areas, climate protection, energy efficiency, educational sciences, personal development and project management.

Internships lasting several weeks are completed in educational institutions and consulting services of the agricultural and forestry sector. This does not only guarantee practical experience but also establishes links to the prospective occupational fields.

Qualification & Authorisation
This course qualifies students to

  • work as consultants in organisations in environmental and sustainability development areas
  • work in agricultural and forestry consulting and promotion services
  • teach in vocational secondary schools (teaching degree for vocational practice in the field of environment)

Environmental Pedagogy: 180 Credits, minimum time: 6 semesters (primarily for graduates of upper secondary and vocational colleges)

Master Studies (120 Credits)

  • Green Care – Master of Science: Students learn how to use the ability of animals and plants to enhance the health and the quality of life of human beings.
  • Educational Management in Rural Areas – Master of Arts: Students learn how to use innovative teaching and learning methods to undertake the management in educational institutions or in consultant service.
  • These master study programmes, which build on the existing expertise of students, provide students with the necessary tools for conducting scientific research. It is also possible to set priorities individually, according to the student’s primary topics of interest.

Theory Meets Practice

In all study programmes internships and professional experience are core areas apart from focusing on theoretical aspects. All students spend a total of eight weeks in schools to practise teaching and in advisory and adult education within the scope of the agrarian and forestry extension service. In the field of environmental pedagogy a mentoring programme was established. Within this programme more than 50 environmental organisations host the students for their internships.


Preserving – Creating – Developing
It is necessary to preserve our livelihood, cultural heritage and social cohesion. Sustainable production methods, new ways of living and new forms of economic activity are to be developed in
a context of an interconnected, globalised world. The promotion and the development of these necessary skills are at the heart of Green Pedagogy.

Therefore, Green Pedagogy is central to the teaching of sustai nable development in the learning fields of agricultural and environmental education. Green Pedagogy thereby serves as a link between the seemingly ambivalent disciplines of agricultural and environmental pedagogy.

 

Foundations and Principles

Green Pedagogy creates learning arrangements for a constructiveand solution-oriented processing of economic, ecological and social ‘hot spots’ in the fields of agriculture, lifestyle, consumption and protection of resources for educational and consultative professional practice. ‘Hot spots’ serves as an umbrella term for controversial current issues of ecological, economic and social fields, which challenge students to a debate. These topics are dealt with in example cases and aim at generating concern and curiosity in students by provoking them to formulate questions and to state opinions.

The teaching and learning settings for Green Pedagogy are based on systemic and constructivist insights. In learning arrangements, concrete situations are constructed that ask for a systematic exploration of these ‘hot spots’. Students, thereby, develop the ability to encounter prospective open or conflicting situations successfully due to personally reflected considerations and taking into account multiple perspectives.

Green Pedagogy manages to link scientific concepts, practical applications and motifs of individual and collaborative action in agriculture and environmental sectors.

Systemic Competence and Design Competence

Green Pedagogy aims at providing the necessary tools for future professionals to find sustainable solutions between the poles of protecting and using nature effectively. Students will develop an understanding of these dynamic relations during their studies.

Green Pedagogy focuses on developing students’ skills to act responsibly and autonomously – despite increasing complexity and conflicting needs and objectives.

Green Pedagogy answers questions on:

  • efficiency increase and resource conservation
  • aporiae in the field of nature protection and use of nature
  • food industry and values
  • ability to act in spite of an exceeding ecological footprint
  • rules for joint entrepreneurship on common land
  • entrepreneurship in complex situations
