Contemporary Prague may be not the biggest city in Europe but it is recognized as one of the most well-known metropolises in Central Europe. It is a seat for almost all of the Czech government institutions (including parliament, president and the government) as well as the religious organizations existing in the Czech Republic and many enterprises, associations, organizations and higher education institutions. The city also functions as the country’s most important interchange and junction hub with the international airport and underground.
According to the data from 2008 the city is a home to 1 226 697 people (the first place in the Czech Republic) and it covers 496 km² (also the first place in the Czech Republic). Prague is divided into 22 administrative districts which consists of a 57 municipal districts. The Eurostat’s data estimate that in the Prague metropolitan area live 1 964 750 people.
