Vienna is often viewed as the world's musical capital - but the city is, in fact, home to an exceptionally rich spectrum of activity across all cultural fields.

No wonder, then, that Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna can offer world class training programmes for instrumentalists, singers, dancers and actors. Every year, around 850 young people from more than 50 countries study with about 250 renowned artists and teachers.

The courses of study at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna offer an opportunity to attain highly qualified artistic and/or music teaching credentials. They form the basis for independent artistic and/or teaching activities, and through the critical examination of artistic, didactic and academic issues contribute to research in and performance of the arts.

The central location of our main facility and its geographical proximity to important cultural institutions - such as the Musikverein, the Konzerthaus, the Vienna State Opera and the Theater an der Wien - facilitates professional and academic exchange and cooperation.

Living in Vienna

Studying and living in a foreign city means broadening one’s horizons and gaining new experiences, friends and opportunities. There are few cities in the world that can match Vienna’s quality of life.

Even so, it isn't always easy to get one’s bearings alone - particularly for those coming from countries with very different social structures, cultures and religions. For this reason, we have collected a list of useful links that should help you to manage day-to-day life - from housing to financial matters, medical care and religious institutions - conveniently as possible.

Since the 2005/06 academic year, the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK-Uni) has been participating in the Erasmus exchange programme offering students and teaching staff seeking mobility within the European Higher Education Area an opportunity to apply for grants.

In 2014 the MUKuni was again awarded the „Extended Erasmus University Charter“ (Erasmus IC Code: A WIEN 52) by the European Commission and is therefore entitled to carry out all Erasmus mobility activities and projects until 2020.

As part of the strategy to further integrate and position the MUK-Uni in regard to comparability, quality assurance and the constant exchange of knowledge on an international level the institute joined two significant associations: in October 2008 the „Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen“ (AEC) and in January 2007 the „European League of Instituts of the Arts“ (ELIA).

The MUK-Uni strives to benefit from and intensify its Erasmus network within the European Higher Education Area. This effort is reflected by the conclusion of more than 100 inter-institutionel agreements with partner institutions since joining the programme.

The Bologna process has been fully implemented at the MUK-Uni: on the one hand our programmes have been structurally adapted to match the international Bachelor and Master architecture, on the other hand the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which greatly facilitates mobility and recognition of study units between academic institutions, has been introduced and its application is supported by quality assurance measures.

In this context the MUK-Uni aims to provide maximum transparency on all levels: all academic programmes and courses (including course descriptions, contents, objectives, course schedules, etc.) as well as contact details of all members of staff are available online from all over the world via the university management system MUKonline (

Embarking on new partnerships

Konservatorium Wien University is not only a center of artistic appreciation and training - it is also a vibrant part of the local, national and international cultural scene. Because of this, it is constantly forming partnerships with other places of learning, cultural enterprises, institutions and initiatives throughout the world.

Important partners include the many universities, academies and conservatories worldwide with which close personal contact already exists. Starting with the 2005/06 academic year, Konservatorium Wien University will be increasing its involvement in international academic programmes, improving the mobility of students and educators and facilitating the exchange of information.

At the same time, the institution frequently stages events in cooperation with important cultural institutions. This assures students of up-to-date and practically oriented training, while also helping young talented performers to realize their initial career breaks before culturally aware audiences.

Finally, common interests and social involvement facilitate cooperation with enterprises and initiatives from the fields of business and charity.
